About the Department

The idea of SUBIS emerged as a university to preserve the culture and heritage of Buddhism and promote interaction with commonalities of Buddhist culture countries of the world.

For this purpose languages of the Buddhist countries were opened as Departments, with Chinese being one of them. As one of the oldest languages of the world, Chinese language acts as a lens to look at the prism of the Chinese world

Vision

The Department aims to develop an independent Indian perspective on China by understanding the commonalities and differences between the two countries.

Mission

The Department aims to encourage interdisciplinary studies and bridge the gap between Chinese language and China Studies.  It also seeks to expand the base of Chinese knowledge seekers so that the benefits are reaped at personal level and society as a whole.

Objectives of the Department

  • To provide a one stop shop for understanding about China and the language.
  • To amalgamate the study of Chinese speaking countries through expansion of cultural contacts and political affinity.
  • To encourage research with Oriental perspectives on China
  • To co-ordinate with individuals/institutions working in the field of Chinese studies in India and abroad

Courses offered

The first batch entered in 2016 and since then many students have landed with plump jobs in the corporate sector. Moreover, few others have bagged plush opportunities to study abroad through various scholarships in China and Taiwan like the Huayu Enrichment Program, Taiwan Education and Cultural exchange.  The Department has also trained two batches of ITBP officers for Basic Chinese through a year-long certificate course. As of now the Department is offering

  • Certificate Course in Chinese Language (2 semester course)
  • Diploma Course in Chinese Language (2 semester course)
  • Masters in Chinese Language (4 semester course)

Salient features of the Department

The Department of Chinese Language takes a rendezvous of Chinese history, cultural, foreign policy, literature, economy, ancient contacts, philosophy etc. through the well oiled and well travelled machinery of Chinese Language. To fulfil the above mentioned objectives, the Department has been conducting various academic seminars on various topics related to China. The Department has welcomed veteran stalwarts like Brigadier Shashi Asthana, Commodore Vasan, Mohan Guruswamy to renowned academicians like Professor Kondapalli, Professor Kamalsheel, Professor Anita Sharma etc.  as subject experts in various capacities. Moreover the Department has been represented at various public forums, media houses through its faculty and students.  The Department has also run Chinese language courses for ITBP officers in 2016-17 and again in 2018-2019.

Students Achievements

The first batch entered in 2016 and since then many students have landed with plump jobs and plush opportunities to study abroad through various scholarships in China and Taiwan. 2016-17 batch student Mr. Khemraj Sharma is currently pursuing higher studies from Nanhua University while Mr Rahul  Jha was awarded the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship TECC.
